The Boddy's of Greymouth

The above couple highly respected in Greymouth and in their lifetime gave their name to the small community of Boddytown, are  an integral part of the Whiteside family tree. One of their daughters Phoebe Priscilla was the authors beloved grandmother. She married William Henry Whiteside.

Mary Boddy, the lady above was affectionately known as 'Grandma Boddy', by all her offspring and although the author of this site is now 75, that has been the case until very recently (April 2009).

Thanks for enlightening our generation go first to the archival pages of the old 'Grey River Argus' and secondly to Barbara Whiteside of Lancashire for seizing on the word 'Lincolnshire' and digging for gold. From all of us concerned Barbara a heartfelt, thank you.

Lawrie Brown, Uti, Lauren and Joshua. Welcome Lawrie to the family you never knew you had. Placed in a home at the tender age of five, Laurie never saw his Mother again and with her went 57 years of not knowing who his family was. Grandson of Maud (nee Boddy) Brown, he lost his father and was thereafter institutionalised. Only last night he found his cousin Maud 17.12.2009. By a great stroke of fortune these three expatriate New Zealanders live with 400 klm of each other. So begins the task of putting together the missing pieces of Lawrie's empty picture. Welcome home Lawrie and may the New Year bring others to enrich your life and thus soften the pain of the passing years.  Cousin Maud and cousin Bruce

The interesting difference between this picture and the original Boddy Girls above is that the latter generations smile. In those days you had to 'hold the pose' and not move. How times have changed..

BODDY FAMILY HISTORY

(Information written in 1982 at a family reunion in Greymouth)

Richard Boddy

Born in Barnsley, Lincolnshire, England in 1844.  He worked in a coal mine and married Mary Norton in 1864 at the age of 20, and immigrated to NZ in 1876.

Mary Norton

Born in Newleham, Lincolnshire, England in 1847 and married at the tender age of 17 years.  Richard and Mary sailed for NZ from the port of London on the ‘Astral Grange’ in 1876 and after four month in shocking, cramped conditions suffering terribly from sea sickness, and enduring the loss of their new baby, born and buried at sea.  They arrived in NZ at the port of Nelson.

They continued south to Westport but would not remain there as Richard did not wish to work in the mines, so continued by coastal ship to Greymouth where the long sea voyage was finished.

Richard walked over the Southern Alps to Sheffield with the intention of working at farming, but would not stay as there was no school for the children.  Returning to Greymouth he bought the original and only house on 73 acres, on Marsden Road, now known as Boddytown, from the Ashtons in 1881.  This house was pulled down in 1903 and the present house, built by their son Ernest on the same 73 acre farm.  This house still stands today.

The pioneering couple had 13 children, the first six being born in England, the seventh (Richard) was born and died at sea on the voyage to NZ.  The last six children, of which 5 survived, were all born in Greymouth.

Richard Boddy, father of the above, was employed in Greymouth at the Dispatch Foundry for many years, while Mary owned and operated the only shop in Boddytown.  The story was told that she was offered the post office to be associated with the shop on condition that she had to notify the Greymouth post office if she left her shop.  Her reply, for posterity was, “I have never told any man when I leave the house, and I’m not starting now!”  Boddytown still does not have a post office.

In 1914 the couple celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary attended by over 40 of their descendents.  It is interesting to consider that the descendents now number 30 on the first generation ie grandchildren of Richard and Mary, and 140 great grandchildren … and there is at least one great, great, great grandchild.

Mary Boddy continued to run her shop well into her 80s, but sold the farm to the Kitchingham’s who ran a bee farm.  Her son Ernest went to work in Moana (½ hour east of Greymouth) and sold his house to his mother for £100, along with ½ acre of land which his mother had given to him as a wedding present.

The last years of her life were spent with her daughter, Annie, until her (Mary) death in 1937 at her daughter Olives home in Christchurch, aged 90 years old.

Richard Boddy died in Greymouth in 1917.
