I am Bruce A Whiteside from Wellington, New Zealand. Born in Auckland 1953, I was the first of the family to be born in a taxi. Actually it was Dad's taxi; it seemed I arrived a little sooner than expected.

My parents were William John Henry Whiteside (b. 1918 Nelson, N.Z) and Lola Adrienne Shaw (b. 1922 Cambridge N.Z) Dad had started work on the NZ railways, but he was a taxi proprietor most of his working life, based in Auckland. Before all us lot were around Mum was the telephonist and R/T operator for the taxi company but later of course, she had her hands full with four boys.

Dads father was Lennard Whiteside. He was born in a mining town called Blue Spur near the town of Lawrence in Otago New Zealand. In fact all his brothers and sisters were born there because their father; Samuel Whiteside was a gold miner of the district.

Samuel Whiteside had been born in Ballymena, Northern Ireland in 1838. The family moved to Greenock, Scotland soon after 1850. Samuel emigrated from Scotland between 1861 and 1866, which is when he arrived in New Zealand.
