Ireland on 19 July 1807. her parents were John Whitesides and Darah Dixon.Eliza
was Christned on april 26th 1818 Sligo, Ireland. she married Thomas Stewart
(1810)on the 17 Oct. 1834 at KilmoreMoy , (Ardnelly) Mayo Ireland. They migrated
to Australia in 1840 aboard the "FORMOSA". with their 3 Children. and settles in
Sydney area.In 1875 Thomas paid the passage out to Australia for some Whitesides
Children, who were Orphans, Believed to be Eliza's Neices and nephews of Eliza.
Thomas and Elizas Son John. G. Stewart is my G Grandfather.

info: My grandmother (father's mother) was Edith Jane Whiteside. She married
Robert Horace Elliott 4 July 1898 in Sydney. She had one son from Robert, my
father Ernest Clyde Elliott born 1 November 1902. I think she separated from
Robert but that he probably still supported her. She became pregnant, probably
around May 1905, from a German named Ernst Wilhelm Paul Heumann. She and Heumann
evidently decided to flee from Sydney. But they also decided to take my father
with them. In effect they abducted him. It was probably for this reason that
they changed their names to Wilhelm Grei and Freda Grei and left on the scow
Maroro for Wanganui, New Zealand. They were in Wanganui on 28 July 1905 because
I have a copy of a postcard Heumann sent to his brother from Wanganui on that
day. The child Wilhelm was born 22 February 1906 at Lyttleton. His birth entry
shows him as illegitimate and the name of the father is not quoted. Heumann and
Edith lived together in Christchurch, and for a !
while in Wellington for some years under their assumed names. They had another
child in 1908. Sometime in the 1920s Heumann left NZ and went to South Africa
where he married an English woman and had a son from her in 1929. He retained
the surname Grei for the rest of his life. Edith also retained it but changed it
to Grey in the late 1920s. My father married under the name Grey and my New
Zealand birth certificate shows my surname as Grey whereas my father's surname
on his Australian birth certificate shows his surname as Elliott. I mention this
detail to give the reason why my surname is Grey.
Edith Jane Whiteside was the son of Samuel Mahon Whiteside from Dublin, Ireland,
occupation draper, according to his Maori War records. Edith's mother was Mary
Jane Gibbins. Samuel fought with the 2nd regiment Waikato Militia, Armed
Constabulary and Forest Rangers. He was wounded in the battle at Te Ngutu O Te
Manu in 1868 (Colonel von Tempsky, the leader of the Forest Rangers, was killed
in the same battle). He was discharged and received his town and farm allotment
of land at Kihikihi (near Kihikihi in the case of the farm) under Crown grants.
He later went to Sydney and died 14 March 1882. He was driving his cart along
the Campbelltown road when the cart hit a rock and turned over, killing him,
according to the Coroner's report.
Samuel and Mary had five children:

Samuel's wife, Mary Jane Gibbins was born 2 January 1853 in Auckland. She died
13 November 1884 at McDonaldtown, NSW. Custody of Edith Jane and Mary Alice
Whiteside was granted to the two executors of Mary's will.
I have not been able to trace Samuel Whiteside in Ireland. According to his war
record he arrived in NZ on a boat the "Corio".

My brother (Ronald James Whiteside) passed this site on to me and I am interested in subscribing.
Bruce Whiteside in Wellington is my cousin on my father’s side (Leonard Charles Lawence Whiteside). Dad was the son of Leonard Whiteside and Beatrice Coulter.
I am the eldest child of Leonard Charles Lawrence Whiteside and Nora Mary Shanks.
I do have various birth and death certificates – but probably cussie Bruce has them also.
